The War and The Canadian Experience Teachers' Professional Development Program introduces educators to the history of Canada in two world wars and the potential for using the subject as a vehicle to foster critical thinking skills and "historical consciousness" in today's young people.
The tour visits the most important Canadian battlefields and memorials. The France and Flanders Program takes participants from the great Vimy pilgrimage of 1936 to the recent anniversary of commemorations of Vimy, D-Day and VE Day, while the Netherlands Liberation Program visits key sites in the Netherlands and along its borders to better understand wartime occupation, resistance, the Holocaust as well as the Allied war efforts to Liberate the Netherlands in 1944-45. Participants explore the latest research and academic debate over Canada's wartime experience.

THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The War and the Canadian Experience Teachers' professional Development Study Tour introduces educators to the history of Canada in two world wars and the potential for using the subject as a vehicle to foster historical thinking skills and historical consciousness in today's young people. Nearly all have reported that the program invigorated their teaching, exposing them to new ideas and methods that enhance relationships between school and community. |
HISTORICAL THINKING
The professional development program builds on the approach outlined by the Big Six historical thinking concepts. The soldier files form the basis for the evidence-based research approach to crafting biographies, which we use as historical entry points into the greater picture of the war as well as pedagogical entry points into teaching using primary sources in the classroom. Art, literature and poetry, monuments and memorials also serve as sources in our site-based learning experience on the tour. |
